The perfect shepherds pie

Wouldn't contemplate making a shepherds pie without a sachet of Colemans. I add a dash of Worcester sauce , a beef stock pot and a squeeze of tomato ketchup, finished with some grated cheese on top for a cheesy crunchy finish. The perfect comfort food

These mixes never fail

These mixes never let me down and this ones no exception. I used slightly less water to get a richer flavour and a thicker sauce. Will definitely buy again.

Good flavour, easy to use

This is a good sauce, fair price, easy to use, dissolves into cold water easily. Simple recipe using it makes a tasty meal. Would prefer sized & recipe for 2 rather than 4, but a spare made up one in the freezer is no hardship.

FAQs

What can I use to thicken my shepherd's pie? ›

The easiest way to thicken shepherd's pie filling is by sprinkling a few tablespoons of flour into the ground beef mixture as it cooks before adding it to the baking dish. The starch in the flour will absorb the extra liquid and create a thick gravy.

Why is my shepherd's pie soggy? ›

A good shepherd's – or indeed cottage – pie, needs a solid, but fluffy top: too much milk or butter, and you'll end up with a sloppy puree instead.

Are the ingredients for shepherds pie? ›

Shepherd's Pie Ingredients

Ground Beef: You could also ground lamb if you prefer. Mashed Potatoes: Use starchy potatoes (like russet or Yukon Gold) for the best mashed potatoes. The mashed potatoes are also made with butter, onion, and Cheddar cheese.

Is shepherds pie and cottage pie the same? ›

The main difference between Cottage Pie and Shepherd's pie is cottage pie uses ground beef, and Shepherd's pie uses ground lamb. Both pies are cooked with vegetables and gravy and baked under a layer of mashed potatoes. To make Shepherd's pie using this recipe, simply substitute ground lamb.

Why does my mash sink in cottage pie? ›

Residual moisture from the potatoes will drip into the beef below as it cooks, and too much of it will cause the potatoes to eventually sink. Aside from ridding your potatoes of excess moisture before you mash them, it also helps to cool the beef down, BBC Good Food shares.

Why is my shepherd's pie so watery? ›

Why is my shepherd's pie runny? Generally, this is caused by using too much stock.

How to make cottage pie less salty? ›

Add an Acidic Ingredient

It won't reduce the sodium level of your dish, but adding an acidic ingredient, such as lemon juice, vinegar, or even a tomato product, can neutralize the saltiness of a dish. Start with a dash or a squeeze, stir well to combine, and give it a taste before adding any more.

Can I use cornstarch instead of flour to thicken pie filling? ›

Some pie recipes thicken the filling with flour; others use cornstarch, while others still rely on tapioca.

How to make shepherd's pie less soupy? ›

Why is my Shepherd's Pie soupy? If your casserole is too runny, chances are you either didn't add enough flour to thicken the gravy or you didn't simmer it long enough to reduce the liquid. Also, make sure your potatoes are thoroughly drained before making the mashed potatoes, so the topping is not too sloppy.

Why does my shepherd pie fall apart? ›

How do you keep shepherds pie from falling apart? The eggs in the mashed potatoes help keep the pie together. You should also make sure to spread the potatoes and press down a bit.

How to tell if shepherd's pie is cooked? ›

How do I know when my Shepherd's Pie is done? Your pie is done when it's bubbly hot (look around the edges) and the potatoes are lightly browned.

What is Costco shepherd's pie made of? ›

About 1/4 of it is ground beef in gravy, and 3/4 make up the mashed potato layer. The meal is more similar to a cottage pie than a shepherd's pie. Traditionally a Shepherd's pie is made using minced lamb.

What is a shepherd's pie called when it is made from beef? ›

The two English terms have been used interchangeably since they came into use in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, although some writers insist that a shepherd's pie should contain lamb or mutton, and a cottage pie, beef.

How is shepherd's pie originally made? ›

And, by doing so, the humble shepherd's pie was born. Originally, the dish contained a pastry shell at the bottom, top, or both. Over time, this morphed into potato slices at the bottom and top of savory minced lamb meat, until it eventually became a topping of mashed potatoes.

What's the best way to heat cottage pie? ›

All appliances vary, these are guidelines only. Oven from chilled: 190°C/Fan 170°C/Gas 5 25-30 mins. Place on a baking tray in the centre of a pre-heated oven. Leave to stand for 2 minutes after heating.

Do I need to defrost cottage pie before cooking? ›

Always freeze the pie on the day that you make it. Defrost in the fridge overnight, then cook as per the recipe. Alternatively, to cook from frozen, heat oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4, cover with foil and cook for 1½ hrs.

How long does homemade cottage pie last? ›

How long can you keep Cottage Pie in the fridge? Once you've put it out, ideally you should eat it within 4 hours. If you allow any left overs to cool, make sure to refrigerate in a container with a lid and chill. You can keep leftovers of Cottage Pie in the fridge for approximately 3 days or so.

What meat is cottage pie made of? ›

There is quite often confusion over the difference between Shepherd's Pie and Cottage Pie. Both are made the same way – a beef mince filling in a gravy sauce that is topped with mashed potato, sprinkled with parmesan then baked.
